Software and growth systems for small teams
Take an AI prototype into production
The short answer
A production-readiness engagement starts by preserving what works, identifying the next real user journey and proving its behaviour under realistic conditions. It can include permissions, integrations, recovery, interface detail and deployment. The deliverable is an agreed release with acceptance evidence and an operating handover, rather than a promise to make an application production-ready in the abstract.
You have a demo that makes the idea clear, but customers or colleagues need something they can rely on. I help founders and small teams assess the existing application, finish the missing work and prepare a controlled release. AI-generated code is assessed on behaviour and maintainability using the same standards as other code.
An agreed first improvement milestone starts from £1,200. Further work is scoped separately after reviewing the existing application.
What the finished solution should accomplish
Turn a working AI-assisted prototype into a scoped release with tested user journeys, appropriate access, recoverable failures and a practical handover.
What this could look like in practice
A quoting demo may calculate a total correctly while still trusting a browser-supplied price. A production workflow needs agreed pricing rules, server-side validation, historical quote snapshots and a clear acceptance state. Testing should cover changed rates, invalid combinations and repeated requests. Those are example requirements to assess, not a claim that your application has already failed them.
Decisions to make before building
Begin with a reproducible build, account and infrastructure inventory, then inspect the primary journey. Prioritise launch blockers before cosmetic cleanup. Establish staging data, a controlled release process and an approach to backup and rollback where persistent data is involved. Keep the first release boundary narrow enough that its behaviour can be demonstrated and reviewed.
When a simpler option is enough
If the prototype is only for research, avoid buying infrastructure for an unvalidated product. If a supported hosted tool already meets the requirement, it may be the right release platform. Custom work becomes worthwhile when real users, business-specific rules or operational obligations exceed what the current setup can support clearly.
An initial scope could include
- Existing-code review and prioritised release scope
- Implementation of agreed gaps with relevant acceptance evidence
- Deployment, access ownership and operating documentation
How we would check the work
- Complete the main journey with fresh accounts and realistic data
- Verify failures, retries and permission boundaries
- Rehearse release and recovery using the documented procedure
How much does production-readiness work cost?
An agreed first improvement milestone starts from £1,200, after reviewing the codebase and requirements. This is not a promise to make an entire prototype production-ready for that price. Further implementation and release work are scoped separately. I would not give a reliable completion price from screenshots alone or assume a rewrite is necessary.
Scope, ownership and working together
You work directly with Joel from discovery through implementation. We agree the outcome, exclusions and acceptance checks before a build. You receive access to the code, deployment and handover documentation. Hosting, third-party services and ongoing support are identified separately; owning the code does not make operating costs disappear.
An agreed first improvement milestone starts from £1,200. Further work is scoped separately after reviewing the existing application. Permissions, migration, source-system access and the number of workflows affect scope. Hosting, maintenance and further milestones are agreed separately. Smaller extensions to existing infrastructure can receive a smaller quote.
