AEO vs SEO: what changes when AI answers the search
The short answer
SEO aims to rank pages in search results and win the click. AEO aims to have your content cited inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews. They share a foundation of crawlable pages, relevant content and authority. Most sites should get SEO right first, then structure key pages so assistants can quote them accurately.
AI assistants have changed how some people research a purchase, and a new set of acronyms has followed: AEO, GEO, LLMO. The question for a small team is simpler. Where should limited time go? This comparison sets out what each discipline optimises, where they overlap and what to do first, based on growing my own products through both search results and AI referrals.

Start with this distinction
Treat AEO as an extension of SEO rather than a separate project: the same pages, structured so search engines can rank them and AI assistants can cite them.
A worked example
Take a question such as how to convert a bank statement PDF to Excel. A traditional result wins by ranking and earning the click. An AI answer may summarise the steps and cite two or three sources. A page that opens with a concise answer, then gives detail, the supported formats and a clear way to try the tool, can win in both places.
How to work through it
Confirm the basics first: important pages indexed, fast and internally linked. Then list the questions buyers ask before they choose, and check how assistants answer them today and whom they cite. Rewrite the pages that deserve citation so the answer comes first, headings mirror the questions and claims are specific and checkable. Track AI referral traffic separately from organic search so you can see each channel.
Tradeoffs and common mistakes
Common mistakes: chasing AEO on a site that is not indexed properly, publishing thin question-and-answer pages in bulk, and judging success by asking an assistant once. AI answers vary between sessions and users, so check repeatedly and rely on referral data. Do not drop SEO fundamentals either; assistants with live search mostly cite pages that already rank.
Actions you can take yourself
- Check your key pages are indexed and fast before anything else
- List ten buyer questions and record how assistants answer them today
- Rewrite one important page with the answer first and question-led headings
- Add a separate analytics view for visits from AI assistants
How to evaluate progress
- Compare organic clicks and AI referral visits month by month
- Re-run your assistant questions monthly and note which sources are cited
- Watch whether rewritten pages hold their search rankings
Should a small business invest in AEO now?
Invest in the overlap. Clear answers, good structure and technical health help in search today and in AI answers as they grow. Avoid paying for AEO sold as a standalone product with guaranteed placements; the field moves quickly and nobody controls what assistants say.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
In practice, yes. Generative engine optimisation and answer engine optimisation describe the same goal: being found, understood and cited by AI systems that generate answers. Some people use AEO for featured snippets and voice answers too, but the techniques are largely shared.
